Who We Are

The Society for Green Microbiology (SGM) is a global organization dedicated to advancing the sustainable applications of microbes to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges. From addressing food insecurity and water pollution to developing renewable energy solutions and restoring ecosystems, we bring together scientists, educators, and professionals to create a greener, healthier planet.

Microbes have the power to determine the future of food, water, energy, climate, and human survival.

Our mission

Our goal is to match our clients with the perfect properties that fit their tastes, needs, and budgets. To advance sustainable microbial applications in addressing global challenges related to food, water, health, and the environment.

Our vision

To position Green Microbiology as a cornerstone of sustainability science, driving innovative solutions for a better future.

OUR STORY

The Society for Green Microbiology began as a vision, evolving into a collaborative movement for sustainable science.

Our team

The Society for Green Microbiology (SGM) started with a clear purpose: to create a global platform where the transformative power of microbes could be shared, explored, and celebrated. Inspired by the pioneering concept of Green Microbiology, coined by Dr. Adenike Akinsemolu in 2012, SGM was born out of a belief in the potential of microbes to address global challenges and drive sustainable practices.

The vision gained further momentum when Dr. Akinsemolu met Dr. Helen Onyeaka at the University of Birmingham. Together, they laid the foundation for a society that would unite passionate individuals and experts worldwide, fostering innovation, collaboration, and impact.

From its inception, SGM has been driven by a commitment to advancing microbial solutions for food, water, energy, and environmental sustainability. Today, it stands as a thriving community dedicated to making Green Microbiology a cornerstone of global sustainability science.

Join us on a Journey of Innovation, Collaboration, and Sustainability where microbes inspire solutions and community drives impact.

Our society is built on the belief that the power of microbes can transform our world. We foster an inclusive community where scientists, educators, and innovators can connect, learn, and contribute to advancing Green Microbiology. Together, we create a space that inspires discovery, supports sustainability, and drives global change.

Why Green Microbiology?

Here’s how Green Microbiology contributes:

Food Systems: Microbial innovations for sustainable agriculture and reduced food waste.
Water Solutions: Clean water through bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and desalination.
Renewable Energy: Microbial fuel cells and bioenergy production.
Ecosystem Restoration: Bioremediation of polluted environments and carbon sequestration.

Green Microbiology bridges science and sustainability, driving global change through innovative microbial applications.
