Who We Are
The Society for Green Microbiology (SGM) is a global organization dedicated to advancing the sustainable applications of microbes to solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges. From addressing food insecurity and water pollution to developing renewable energy solutions and restoring ecosystems, we bring together scientists, educators, and professionals to create a greener, healthier planet.
Mission

To advance sustainable microbial applications in addressing global challenges related to food, water, health, and the environment.

Vision

To position Green Microbiology as a cornerstone of sustainability science, driving innovative solutions for a better future.

Our Story

The Society for Green Microbiology began as a vision, evolving into a collaborative movement for sustainable science.

The Society for Green Microbiology (SGM) started with a clear purpose: to create a global platform where the transformative power of microbes could be shared, explored, and celebrated. Coined from the pioneering concept of Green Microbiology by Dr. Adenike Akinsemolu, SGM was born out of a belief in the potential of microbes to address global challenges and drive sustainable practices.

The vision gained further momentum when Dr. Akinsemolu met Dr. Helen Onyeaka at the University of Birmingham. Together, they laid the foundation for a society that would unite passionate individuals and experts worldwide, fostering innovation, collaboration, and impact.

From its inception, SGM has been driven by a commitment to advancing microbial solutions for food, water, energy, and environmental sustainability. Today, it stands as a thriving community dedicated to making Green Microbiology a cornerstone of global sustainability science.
